St. George Sunset Study, 5x7, oil on linen, $175

Todays painting is actually a study for a commission I just finished. The collectors are happy and I can release this little jewel into the wild. I love a good sunset, but they are such a challenge for me. I should probably spend more time observing and painting them on the spot. I’ll post the finished commission on down the road.

Painting of the Day: Shop Local, 5x7, oil on linen, $150

I love the facades of old buildings. These were in downtown Columbia, TN. Columbia is a very interesting spot. It is a great example of how vibrant a  southern downtown  area can be . It is close to Nashville, which always helps, but there are great little local owned stored everywhere. As you got off the main square a block or 2 there were some great old buildings resting in perpetuity… the way I like them. I look forward to being able to shop local at home.

Painting of the Day: Under the Bridge, 8x10, oil on linen. I found this beautiful old bridge over the river on a backroad un upper Alabama trying to find a way to get home without going through Chattanooga traffic. I love those little accidental find like these. I have a pin dropped on it now and plan on making many visits to it the future.

Painting of the Day: Meandering, 7x10, gouache on paper, $250. This was actually done as a study for a larger painting that one of my best pals from way back added to his collection. I enjoy using gouache as a medium for study because the colors seem to be more intense and the value key a little higher. They make for much lighter paintings in my opinion. I have done several oil paintings based on small gouache studies. I would certainly recommend that if you are going to try this idea… buy the same colors in gouache you have in oils!

Painting of the Day

I cant believe it’s been over a month since I was last in Charleston… seem like yesterday and years ago. As soon as I got back I painted a couple of gouache paintings of some of the scenes there to start getting the rust off for a trip to Scotland this summer. This little scene is so typical of Charleston, a lovely tree lined street with great architecture at sunset. Evening Pink, 5x7, gouache.

Painting of the Day: Inspirations from Meriwether County

I should be painting down in Meriwether  County, GA  this week for Open Air Meriwether. Our event goes to raise money for arts education in that county. We have decided to host the event virtually, so I’ll be posting paintings that have been painted on the spot there as well as paintings I will be doing this week from reference of the area. Painting of the Day:

Painted this little study when I came back from Tennessee last October. Ive been keeping in close so I can make a larger painting, but I think I'm ready to release it to a new home in hopes that it will motivate me to do a larger piece. While we were in Tennessee they were filming a Safelight windshield commercial in the area and I saw this barn pop up in the commercial not too long after. This is in Leipers Fork.

Painting of the Day Last I was in Apalachicola, I spent some time wandering downtown as the sun went down. I got this shot of one of my favorite subjects, Joe Taranto Seafood Co. as the sun faded. This building is pure old Florida. It’s been painted every shade of sea foam green and pink you could imagine and each year a little more shows through… like a jawbreaker. The Burns Farm, 5x7, gouache, $150

Painted at this farm a couple of years back and just found a treasure trove of reference for me to play with. I loved the way this barn was a little side lit with a John Deere peaking out the door and the long cast shadow creeping in from the bottom right. Made for an interesting composition and some fun play with temperature.

Painting of the Day: Moved Out, 5x7, gouache on illustration board, $150. This certainly isn’t the first time I have painted this building in Cartersville, GA, where the Booth Western Museum is. Previous trips to that spot inspired a lot of paintings and ideas. On my last trip I was sad to see that the old hardware store that had been there for decades had finally thrown in the towel. The place was completely vacant with the exception of a discarded pile of cinderblock.

The Rich Coast

Painting of the Day, Spring Break Edition:

I thought I would offer up a larger painting as the Painting of the Day in honor of Spring Break. This one is a painting inspired by a spring break trip to the Corcovado National park in Costa Rica many moons back. When I was teaching, some fronds of mine and I would take a group down every other spring break to a different spot in Costa Rica. This one was one of my favorites… no roads in, no roads out. Only accessible by boat and we slept in tents by the beach, hardly and cell service and they cooked all of our meals. It was heaven. This painting takes me back there every time I look at it.

Painting of the Day: The family and I went walking around or new walking trail here in Newnan not too long ago PC (Pre Civid). It was great to be able to see local landscapes that no one had really been able to access before. At the same time I was also sad to see such beauty divided by a gigantic concrete path with a stripe down the middle of it. Regardless, I think its important to make nature more accessible to everyone… but I prefer to wander off the beaten path… so I painted it the way I wish it was. Painting of the Day:

This is a little gouache painting of an Oyster House in East Point, FL. Each time I go back this building is missing more and more pieces. This was from a few years back, the building is half that size now. Hope to go down there soon when we figure out how they are going to run thew Forgotten Coast Invitational. The next event I was supposed to do is @openairmeriwether and as one of the planners, we have a creative way to bring the paint out to you. This painting has a cold wax vanish on it and can be framed without glass.
