Contemplating a plein air effort in the studio

Brought this plein air painting home to stare at it for little while. I wound up adding the light patch in front of barn which I knew I needed to do when I was packing it up. What I didn't see at the time was that I needed to push the trees in the background back in the distance. In reality they were the same value and color as the grass in the foreground, they were CLOSE. Sometimes you have to paint what you don't see, but what you know needs to be the truth. You should always have distance between fore, middle and background... or it just doesn't work. I have really enjoyed not rushing things outdoors and just observing, and if something needs a tweak back in the studio... so be it. I certainly can't remember everything I should know out there! There are times to finish one outdoors entirely, and there are times to really work it out in the field AND back at the studio.

Painting Outside in Oxford

Julie and I visited her Ole Miss college friends last weekend. We stayed in downtown Oxford and visited Holly Springs, New Albany, Taylor and Pontotoc. Needless to say, I feel in love all over again. When I first started painting I took a lot of pictures in Oxford MS and painted them in the studio. It was great to go back there and see it through the lens of a plein air painter. I had time for one piece in the early morning hours. I love being in the city early in the morning. I have it all to myself when it is at it's most beautiful... and trust me, Oxford is a city that sleeps late! I plan to use this piece for a larger on later this week.
